This is the first blog of the learn to play piano online series – I will reveal a very famous exercise that every pianists must know and should practice it daily. How important it is!

If you want to develop finger dexterity and want to play though fast solo on your piano, this exercise is a must.

What is the name of this powerful exercise?

Well, you probably heard about it – the name of the exercise is “Hanon exercises”.

If you don’t know what Hanon exercises are, here is a brief summary:play piano by ear - Hanon

Hanon exercises are specifically designed to train the pianist in speed, precision, agility, independence, dexterity, and strength of all of the fingers as you may probably notice that some of your fingers (like the pinky and ring finger) are weaker than others.

They were developed by Charles-Louis Hanon and people usually refer it to “Hanon exercises.”

The exercises are some fingering patterns that are strategically designed to focus on certain fingers; each exercise has a specific training goal depending on what exercise you are on.

If you can read music, or if you are an intermediate pianist, I will suggest you to type Hanon exercises on google and do a google search. You can probably find some free sheet music of those exercises since they are quite classic and famous exercises. If you prefer a music book, just go to your local music store or do a search on amazon. You can surely find this book in the store.

There are like 50-60 hanon exercises in the book, but I will suggest you to focus on one at a time. Once you learn the finger pattern, you can move on to the next one. However, bear in mind that moving on to the next one does not mean you do not practice the previous one.

The way I do it is to learn the new one while practicing the previous hanon exercise at the same time. For example, you are learning exercise 4, you will need to practice exercise 1, 2, 3 and 4 if you follow my approach.

You may ask that how come you can finish all 50 – 60 exercises in that way? Personally, I really focus on the first 8-12 exercises. I practice exercise 1-5 daily and learn exercise 6-10 really well. That’s all you need.

If you can get the hanon exercises for free, you may ask why you still need to buy a book or even a program?

Personally, practicing the “Hanon exercises” bu yourselves is not the way I recommend unless you are an experienced pianist, since hanon exercises need to be practiced under a high tempo. There is a risk to get injured especially your wrist  if you tense your muscle too much or practice it in a wrong way.

That is why I am suggesting this program to all level of pianists – Hear and Play Hanon Volume 1 Mastery (included first 10 exercises)

To be honest, this is the best option to go except you got a private piano teacher to guide you through the exercises.

Hear and Play Hanon Volume 1 Mastery is taught by a professional pianist (James Wrubel), so you won’t need to worry about picking up bad habits. Plus,  James will show you inside tips and insights on how to get the most out of those exercises and how you should practice them.

In addition,  even if you cannot read sheet music, you can still learn these exercises. Yes, no sheet music and no reading  is required.

It is absolutely suitable for all level of musicians and all types of pianist no matter you are an “ear type” or “reading type”~
