New Year series part 5: The Best Ways to start your New Year in a wonderful and productive manners

It’s your music coach Ray again. It is near the end of January 2016 and I want to ask how was your new year until now?

Is it the best year in your life and in your music learning journey? or is it not as great as you thought it will be?Vision of your music learning journey

And are you struggling to keep your new year resolutions?

If you answer yes to the above question, you are not the only one. We all struggle in some aspects and it is always difficult to keep focusing on your goal and ignore the distractions. That is one of the reason why life is fun; challenges are fun once you overcomes it.

With the advice I am going to share in this blog post, you should feel powerful and encouraging to go out and set some powerful resolutions in your 2016.

Finished reading part 1? Then, we can go straight into today lesson then. Today I am going to share two more secrets in goal setting and you will feel well-equipped to achieve your goals in all areas of your life. Not just music, but career, fitness and health etc….

The number 1 secret in new year resolution

It is so simple that most people simply overlooked how powerful this tip is. And starting from today, you should be doing this one thing for the rest of your life. I am not kidding; it is that powerful and important, yet super easy to implement. 

The secret is you should set your resolutions/ goals every month; every week is even better.  Anyway, setting your goals monthly is a good starting point. That’s it; that is the secret. 

But why is it so powerful?

Most people, including me and you, are not good at following through. It is basically a human nature; we are good at beginning new project, but not quite good at finishing those projects. Do you have any books you started to read a year ago but still haven’t finished it yet? or any music exercise books? or training courses? That’s what I am talking about here.

Setting a goal every month simply give us a new start. It’s like a new year day. Most people wait a new year and begin to change their habit and life. But we are elite and not normal people so WHY WAIT!

You can have a new start right away whenever you want. Maybe you set a new year resolution that you will be familiar all 12 keys major and minor scales on the piano. However, you feel boring when you completed 6-8 keys and give up. Why don’t you set a new goal to complete the remaining scales in the following month? If you give up again, setting a new goal based on what you have done and achieved.  

You can change your habit and your life whenever you decide to; you don’t need to wait til next year to change your life. 

Promise me you will implement this tip right way.

Deal? Okay that’s the first secret. Let’s go to the second secret.

The correct way of setting new years resolutions 

The secret is you should set separate goals in different area of your life rather than setting a general and vague goal in general term. 

I will give an example for your to understand.

Let’s say I want to improve my career, music and fitness in 2016.

If I do it in a general way, my goal will be vague and not easy to implement like “I want to improve my piano skill, get a promotion in my work and get in shape this year.

In contrast, I can do it in more specific and practical way.

I set three goals in each area.

For example, in Music, my top three goals are:

  1. Master magic and minor scales in all 12 keys. setting fitness goals 2016

  2. Improvisation on a jazz standard.

  3. Transcribe a solo from a great improviser and try to implement the scales and the solo in my own improvisation.

In fitness, my top three goals may be:

  1. Start going to gym one time every week.

  2. Start follow a workout program and go to the gym 2 times a week.

  3. Lose/ gain 10 pounds in 3-6 months.

I think you get the idea from the above example. My suggestion is your top three goals can be interrelated. My number 3 goal in music is the combination and application of the number 1 and 2. 

My number 2 goal in fitness is a further step of goal 1. 

The funny thing is that when you achieve your goal in one area, it will boost your motivation and self-confidence a lot. And your other goals will be much more easy to fulfill. 

That’s it. Now, combined with the part 1 article, you have all the secrets you need in order to set powerful new year resolutions and improve your life. 

What you need to do next is to take action and implement my advice right away. Many people claimed that knowledge and information is money and of great value. My take is that knowledge and information alone have absolutely no value unless you take action and implement what you know.
